John Harrod is a fiddler and an ethnomusicologist whose field recordings of Kentucky musicians are housed at Berea College and the Kentucky Center for Traditional Music at Morehead. Harrod began performing in the 1970s and ’80s with bands like the Progress Red Hot String Band, the Bill Livers String Ensemble, and the Gray Eagle Band, which re-introduced Kentucky audiences to traditional musicians such as Bill Livers and Lily May Ledford. A Kentucky Arts Council folk artist-in-residence and recipient of the Folk Heritage Award, Harrod has produced field recordings that are available on Rounder Records as well as issued by the Field Recorders Collective. He performs today with Kentucky Wild Horse, but “Johnny Come Along” is all Harrod, with more than 20 tracks of old-time Kentucky fiddle tunes.
