J.P. Fraley is considered one of the masters of Kentucky fiddling, learning at the age of eight from his father, Richard, who encouraged his music so strongly as to let him out of farmwork when he said that he wanted to go play a tune. Fraley went on to study with many well-known fiddlers of northeast Kentucky, including Clark Kessinger and the legendary Ed Haley, and won awards at old-time music festivals such as the Appalachian String Band Festival and Fiddler’s Grove, where he was designated a Master Fiddler after winning three Fiddler of the Festival titles. Today a festival is held in his honor eaxch year — J. P. Fraley’s Mountain Music Gathering — and his music lives on in records like “Galleynipper.”
