Butter Beans

Release date: January 1, 2001

In addition to being an accomplished old-time banjo player, entertainer, and educator, Smiddy was Chancellor Emeritus at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. “Papa” Joe Smiddy & Reedy Creek played together for more than four decades. Reflecting their broad musical tastes, the band plays a variety of old-time music and original songs on “Butter Beans,” including classics like “Cumberland Gap” and “Sally Ann.”

“Joseph C. Smiddy …is a renaissance man and a mountain legend. As comfortable in the rotunda in Charlottesville as he is at the Carter Fold in Hiltons. “Papa Joe” is at once a scholar, educator, politician, orator, storyteller, and top-notch claw-hammer banjo picker.”
