WMMT/Appalshop, Inc.

Founded in 1985, Appalshop's community radio station WMMT is non-commercial and on the air 24-hours a day online and at 88.7 FM. WMMT operates at 15,000 watts broadcasting to portions of four states with the assistance of 50 volunteer community DJs.

The WMMT General Manager acts as the leader of WMMT-FM, Appalshop’s community radio station. WMMT’s mission is to be a 24-hour voice of mountain people’s music, culture, and social issues, to provide broadcast space for creative expression and community involvement in making radio, and to be an active participant in discussion of public policy that will benefit coalfield communities and the Appalachian region as a whole.

Job Duties:

The General Manager provides leadership and coordination for all aspects of station activity, including fundraising, staff management, volunteer management, and government compliance. As the head of WMMT 88.7 FM, the GM works closely with Appalshop’s Executive Director, organizational managers, and other Program Directors to create a collaborative work environment. The GM leads long-range strategic planning to optimize financial growth and sustain community relationships, as well as maintaining WMMT's daily operations.


  • Responsible for preparing annual WMMT program plan and budget
  • Monitor budget, income and expenses; ensure annual audit is carried out
  • Lead station in strategic planning / think creatively about the station’s future
  • Oversee station operations, responsible for station bills and memberships
  • Make sure requirements of Appalshop governance are met and needs of WMMT met by Appalshop

Government Relations:

  • Responsible for Corporation for Public Broadcasting reporting and relations
  • Responsible for FCC compliance, working with WMMT Program Director to ensure volunteers follow FCC rules


  • In coordination with the Development Director, create and implement a fundraising plan and fundraisers for station operations (duties which will include grant-writing, grant identification, identification of other funding sources, etc)
  • See that grant requirements are fulfilled and reports are timely; maintain grants calendar
  • Participate in Appalshop development efforts and database oversight

Community Relations:

  • Primary spokesperson for WMMT in media, public functions, and fundraising efforts; they will be visible at WMMT-sponsored events and with programmers
  • Oversee WMMT communications in conjunction with Appalshop’s Communications Director: website, online stream, social media, newsletter, etc.
  • Point on Community Advisory Board: Will work with other staff to organize meetings and work of WMMT’s CAB (including fundraising and special projects)

General Responsibilities:

  • Supervision of WMMT staff including hiring/firing, onboarding, grievances, and regular staff check-ins
  • Responsible for WMMT and articulating the station’s mission locally and nationally
  • Lead weekly staff meetings and monthly work plan meetings
  • WMMT point for coordination with other Program Directors
  • Point on technology/equipment-related issues and with WMMT’s contract engineer


The candidate should have at least two years of non-profit management or fundraising experience, be a fast-learner with great organizational, interpersonal, writing, and prioritization skills. WMMT seeks an applicant who understands the role of community-based radio and arts institutions, can work independently and in teams, and is ready to bring creativity to the position. Radio experience is preferred.

The WMMT General Manager is a year-round, full time position in Whitesburg, Kentucky in a salary range of $42-45,000 with full paid benefits.
