Summary: The Financial Director is a senior leader of Appalshop administration composed of the Development Director, Communications Director, and Operations Director, who work in concert with and support of the Executive Director. The Financial Director works closely under the guidance of the Executive Director and will collaborate with administration, Appalshop’s Board Treasurer, and various committees of the Board. The Financial Director will also engage with and support their direct reports – the Systems Administrator and the Administrative Director & Human Resources Generalist. The Financial Director will also engage with external accountants who assist with regular accounting activities and an external audit firm, for completion of the annual audit and 990 filing.

Job Responsibilities:

The Financial Director will oversee all of Appalshop's financial record keeping and reporting as well as supervise additional administrative staff. This role will also be asked to represent Appalshop in a variety of local, regional, and national settings. Some other key responsibilities for this position include: 

  • Lead the annual budgeting process. Prepare and submit financial reports as required by funding sources or as needed for internal and external meetings.
  • In partnership with the Treasurer of Appalshop's Board of Directors, co-lead Appalshop’s Financial Committee.
  • Work with the Executive Director and Development Director to ensure Appalshop has adequate finances to meet the yearly budget. Work with administration, board, and board committees in long range financial planning.
  • Ensure that an annual fiscal audit has been executed by an independent CPA/audit firm and submit all materials requested by the auditor in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Ensure that the annual 990 filing is completed.
  • Work with external investment advisors to maintain Appalshop’s endowment and finances.
  • Reconcile all accounts monthly, process accounts payable, and process bi-weekly payroll.
  • Monitor cash flow and prepare cash flow projections as needed or requested.
  • Work with the Executive Director and Development Director to forecast for future fiscal periods.
  • Ensure all taxes are filed on time. Maintain petty cash.
  • Work with an external insurance broker to ensure Appalshop has adequate insurance coverage. Ensure employee benefits are brokered and negotiated each year.
  • Maintain an audit worthy retirement plan, and ensure the 5500 is filed on schedule.

Qualifications: The candidate should have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (advanced degree preferred) and five years of experience in non-profit accounting, finance, or administration. Strong skills in Excel and QuickBooks are preferred. Grants management experience, strong writing and prioritization skills are also necessary.

Compensation: This is a full-time salaried position with full benefits including 100% employer paid health insurance, generous retirement and life insurance benefits package. This role’s salary range is $56,000-$80,000, salary is commensurate with experience.  

Location: Appalshop’s main offices are located in Jenkins, KY. This role is flexible/hybrid work eligible.
