Summary: The Development Director is a key role as part of an institutional strategy and management team within Appalshop’s administrative arm. This position will work closely with Appalshop’s Executive Director, Financial Director and Appalshop’s Program Directors. In addition, the Development Director will be responsible for managing all other development staff and contractors.

Job Responsibilities:

The Development Director will lead all institutional fundraising. In particular the position will play a key role in large, multi-year proposals and managing major donor and funder relationships. The position also represents the organization in a variety of settings locally and nationally. Some key responsibilities for this position include: 

  • With the Executive Director, develop and communicate an organizational fundraising strategy that supports the organizational mission, strategic plan and key programmatic work.
  • In coordination with the Financial Director, develop forecasting for Appalshop's budgets and funding for at least two years into the future.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director, Financial Director and Appalshop Board to create and track annual program plans and budgets as a part of a strategic plan.
  • Work closely with Program Directors to ensure adequate funding and coordination for programmatic activities and staff.
  • Lead and directly manage the Development Team within Appalshop’s administrative arm.
  • Write institutional proposals and reports. Ensure grant compliance and reporting.
  • Manage individual giving relationships and ensure year-end reporting notifications to donors are provided. Track and develop major donor relationships.
  • Interact with community and regional partners to better understand the role Appalshop has within the central Appalachian area. Develop regional fundraising partnerships.
  • Administer the organization’s capital campaign.
  • Meet with Program Directors regularly, assisting them on strategy and professional development needs. Assist Program Directors with grant proposals and reports, as needed.
  • Represent Appalshop at funder and donor meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned

Travel Requirements: This role will be asked to occasionally travel to regional & national events. On average expect 30% of time to be dedicated to traveling.

Qualifications: The candidate should have at least five years of development experience, preferred in the arts or culture sector. They should be a fast-learner with great organizational, interpersonal and prioritization skills. The candidate will have strong writing skills and demonstrated success in securing both private and public funding. The candidate will be comfortable with Slack, Google docs, Salsa Engage or other CRMs. Ideally candidates will also have experience in running a capital campaign as well as a background in organizational development. Appalshop seeks an applicant who understands the role of community-based arts institutions, can work independently and in teams and has the ability to travel.

Compensation: This role’s salary range is $56,800 - $80,000 salary is commensurate with experience. This is a full-time salaried position with full benefits including 100% employer paid health insurance, including dependents, generous retirement and life insurance benefits package. 

Location: Appalshop’s main offices are located in Jenkins, KY. This role is flexible/hybrid work eligible, though an in-person presence 75% of the time is required for this specific position.
