Another successful Summer Documentary Institute is in the books!
After four weeks of filmmaking education and practice, our youth interns had an additional four weeks to produce their own documentary short film. The results were three unique, compelling films that capture the Appalachian region through the eyes of nine local youth.
Heritage on a Plate - by Colby Amburgey, Wolfgang Gunnar Miles, and Tucker Mason
Heritage on a Plate showcases Appalachian farmers, chefs, and gardeners as they walk us through the process of growing, cooking, and serving Appalachia’s most iconic meals and the importance they serve in the community.
Under the Hood - by Skylee Howard, Hayley Brock, Colt Powers
Under The Hood is a compelling short documentary that delves into the intricate world of a chop shop and the family connected to it. The documentary traces the history of the chop shop, exploring its rise and the impact it had on the lives of the people involved. Years after the shop's decline, the film shifts focus to the remaining members of the family.
Shoulder to Shoulder - by Adi Hockenberry, Jett Kincer, Brooklyn Collier
Shoulder to Shoulder is a short documentary embracing Appalachia’s punk, DIY, and skate scenes. The film shines a light on the importance of community art and easily accessible third spaces like skateparks. The documentary revolves around a stencil workshop in Whitesburg, KY where many community members come together to create new and diverse art.
We are so incredibly proud of our interns and their hard work over the past eight weeks! We were happy to premiere these new films to an amazing crowd of community members last week on August 2nd. Thank you to all who joined us and helped us celebrate these talented young filmmakers.
Though we are sad to see another Summer Documentary Institute come to an end, we are excited to share our three brand new films on the Appalshop YouTube page very soon! They will be released weekly starting next Thursday, August 15th. Subscribe to our YouTube channel now to make sure you don’t miss them.
These films will also soon be entering the film festival circuit! Follow the Appalachian Media Institute on Facebook and Instagram for the latest updates.
