It has been a busy summer around here, with so many opportunities to build community in person. If you are looking for things to do this summer, look no further!

Summer Documentary Institute Screening

We have officially reached the halfway point of this year’s Summer Documentary Institute, hosted by our Appalachian Media Institute (AMI)! The previous four weeks saw our interns learning the basics of documentary filmmaking, watching and discussing films, and putting their new skills to the test in a variety of practice projects.

Now we are switching gears to begin production on their final film projects! Our interns will have four weeks to complete the filmmaking process, from an initial concept to a completed documentary film.

We can’t wait to see what they create and to share the results with you! Join us on August 2nd at 9pm at Appalshop’s solar pavilion, located at 91 Madison Street in downtown Whitesburg, KY, for a FREE community screening of our three brand-new AMI productions. We hope to see you there!

In the meantime, follow AMI on Facebook and Instagram for the latest updates on our interns and their work!

Reading Series

We also want to invite you to a FREE evening with Whitney Collins on July 17, author of Ricky & Other Love Stories (2024, Sarabande) and Big Bad (2021, Sarabande), which won the Mary McCarthy Prize, a Bronze Medal INDIES, and a Gold Medal IPPY. Whitney will be doing a workshop, book reading, Q&A, and signing.

Join us July 17 at Groundswell (229 Main Street, Whitesburg, KY). From 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Whitney will lead a workshop on writing beginnings. While free, this portion of the evening requires registration. At 7:15, Whitney will read from Ricky & Other Love Stories.

We’d love to see you at either portion of the event—there will even be refreshments! Check out our Facebook Event to get updates.

Be sure to save the dates for the entire series as well:

  • Whitney Collins - July 17
  • Arwen Donahue - August 8
  • Misty Skaggs - August 22
  • Claudia Love Mair - September 5
  • Ondine Quinn - September 26

We would be remiss if we didn’t tell y’all that this event series is put on in partnership with Kentucky Foundation for Women and the Read Spotted Newt. So come out and support these sponsors and Whitney Collins!
