Misty Skaggs workshop + reading on August 22

You won’t want to miss this event! On August 22, join WMMT and Roadside Theater for a FREE evening with Misty Skaggs, author of Planted by the Signs: Poems (2019, Ohio University Press). Misty will lead a workshop titled “Write Like a Heathern!” and read from Planted by the Signs along with a few brand new unpublished poems. We’ll also have refreshments!

When: August 22, 2024 | Workshop at 6:00 p.m. | Reading at 7:15 p.m.

Where: Groundswell, 229 E. Main Street, Whitesburg, KY 41858 (the old post office)

The evening will begin with the 6:00 pm workshop titled “Write Like a Heathern.”

Heathen, n. - A benighted creature who has the folly to worship something he can see and feel.”

—Ambrose Bierce, The Unabridged Devil's Dictionary

This creative writing workshop cuts loose and runs wild! It is designed to bring out the inner heathern in all of us and to facilitate producing new work inspired by indulging the five senses. We will see and feel and write poetry that will help writers learn to focus on sensory detail to express theme and feeling. Participants of ALL experience levels are encouraged and more than welcome! Together we’ll focus on laying aside stuffy misconceptions (and maybe even the rules of grammar) to focus on developing our voices and connection to the world around us.

This portion of the evening is free, but does require registration.

At 7:15, Misty will read from her poetry collection, Planted by the Signs, and may even share some new, unpublished work!

A huge thanks to Cowan Community Center, Kentucky Foundation for Women, and the Read Spotted Newt for partnering with us on our summer literary event series! Save the date for upcoming events:
