Don’t miss the final workshop in our 2024 reading event series! On September 26, join WMMT and Roadside Theater for a FREE evening with ONDINE QUINN, author of Creating Community through Cuban Cuisine. Ondine will lead a workshop on poetry as a vehicle for sharing our stories and will discuss their new cookbook.
When: September 26, 2024 | Workshop at 6:00 p.m. | Reading at 7:15 p.m.
Where: Groundswell, 229 E. Main Street, Whitesburg, KY 41858 (the old post office)
The evening will begin at
6:00 pm with Ondine’s workshop titled “Wild Tongues Can't be Tamed: Poetry as an Act of Love, Truth-telling and Resistance.” In this workshop we will discuss poetry as a vehicle for sharing our stories, particularly those that are deliberately silenced or preferably unheard. We will read poetry from authors describing what it is to live at the margins, and workshop participants will have an opportunity to write a poem that reflects their own identities and/or experiences.
This portion of the evening is free, but does require registration.
Then, at 7:15pm, Ondine will share from their new cookbook Creating Community through Cuban Cuisine. Inspired by their mother’s Cuban home cooking and a desire to create community around shared meals, the author created 30+ meat and plant-based recipes to bring everyone to the table. Also included are suggested activities for sharing stories and strengthening community connections, and beautiful images based on photos taken from the author's travels around Cuba.
A huge thanks to Cowan Community Center, Kentucky Foundation for Women, and the Read Spotted Newt for partnering with us on our summer literary event series!
WMMT Fall Fund Drive
Also don’t forget that our WMMT Fall FUN Drive is underway! Let’s all take a little time to celebrate and honor home-grown, community-supported radio from September 18-27.
We’re excited to revamp Robert Gipe’s “One Nation, Underpaid” design, of course, inspired by national current events. We’ll have lots of live music, special programming, and more coming your way, so be on the lookout on our
Facebook event page and keep your ears tuned at 88.7fm or
wmmt.org.
We encourage you to make your one-time gift now and be a part of the Soupbeans and Cornbread nation. Performing the World
Last, but certainly not least, our project “Performing Our Future”—a multiracial grassroots coalition started by Roadside Theater that links rural and urban communities in Alabama, Kentucky, Maryland, and Wisconsin—will be part of
Performing the World 2024!
Performing Our Future has been growing since 2015, working toward a future where everyone belongs, everyone’s contribution matters, and we own what we make. Our Interim Executive Director, Tiffany Sturdivant, is also lead organizer for “Performing Our Future.” On September 26, she will be presenting alongside coalition members to share about Performing Our Future's theory, practice, origins, and challenges, before turning to an interactive sharing of questions, conversation, stories, and ideas from all who are attending.
