Appalshop Arts Fellowship for Black Appalachian artists applications open!

In recent years, Appalshop has been in reflection and conversation about our past, present, and future as an arts organization fighting to do anti-racist work in central Appalachia. 

In September 2021, our Board of Directors approved a new artist-in-residency program to support Black Appalachian artists in our region. This is a way for us to use our capacity to help bridge gaps within our organization and community and use the power of arts and media to empower individuals already doing this important work You can read more in depth about fellowship guidelines and timeline here. 

Ideally, the chosen artists would already be deeply engaged with Black communities in the central Appalachian region and have an existing project they either want to continue or expand.

Artists will work collaboratively with Appalshop's programs and partners to host and guide important conversations that help bridge community and bring further understanding and awareness of the rich diversity that exists within central Appalachia, both now and historically. 

This position will be a full-time salaried position with benefits, and Appalshop will also provide a separate supplemental materials fund for the artists’ final project to be completed.
