It’s that time of year again! WMMT-FM’s Fall Fund Drive is LIVE! From September 17 – October 1, we’re having a big ole’ Fall celebration, and it’s not just any old celebration, it’s WMMT’s 40th birthday! Now, I know what you’re thinking–you’re probably expecting your favorite radio station to plunge into a mid-life crisis, put some flame decals on the studio windows, dye our hair a wild color, do anything we can to show we’ve still got it. Well, we’ve got news for you–our 40th birthday ain’t no midlife crisis, because WMMT’s gonna live to 400 (at least)! If anything, we’re in tip-top shape, and we’re bringing you nonstop radio cardio all month long. Can you keep up?
Since it is our birthday and all, we’ll clear the air—yes, we’re accepting gifts! We’re polite, so we invited everyone to the party. As y’all might know, It’s been a tough year for public radio, so we’re hoping this Fall Fun Drive feels like a true celebration–a chance for us to get together with folks, host special events, and raise some money to support doing what we love–empowering people from our region to share their stories, their music, and their voice with folks all over this little spinning rock we’ve all found ourselves on.
And look, we’re not selfish–we wouldn’t ask for something from y’all without something to offer in return. We’ve got a whole slate of special events happening in-person and on air, as well as exclusive fund drive swag for those who support our campaign.
Tune in at 88.7FM or wmmt.org during the two-week drive period to catch your favorite shows, hear special guests and events, and other surprises–hear is some of what we’ve got planned:
Three in-person events at our NEW studio (253A E Main St. Whitesburg):

- Sept. 29 | 6 pm | Appalheads screening with Anna Richardson White filmmaker chat

Another New Film From the Appalachian Media Institute
Appalshop is proud to share another new film from this year’s AMI Summer Documentary Institute interns. “Drag Me Home” is a portrait of resilience, self-expression, and the chosen families at the heart of drag culture. Told through bold stories and bold voices, it captures the struggles and joys of finding belonging in places that don’t always make space for difference.

This Month’s Pay-What-You-Want Album from June Appal
A new month means a new Pay-What-You-Want album from the June Appal Recordings catalog! This month, we’re showcasing a personal favorite from the June Appal team—Earl Gilmore’s From the Depths of My Soul.
Earl was a lifelong resident of Clinchco in Dickenson County, Virginia, and was a member of the A.M.E. Zion-Methodist Baptist Church. This album is a wonderful blend of blues, gospel, soul, and folk music. It’s an incredibly moving album, and is perfect for the transition from Summer to Fall. You can stream/download it on the June Appal Bandcamp page.
