Join us this Sunday, November 16, for a special WMMT-FM fundraiser concert at The Woodbine Chamber in Louisville, Kentucky!
Enjoy live music from a whole slew of WMMT friends, including Bonnie Prince Billy, Grace Rogers, Sarah Kate Morgan and Leo Shannon. Doors open at 4 PM, and music starts at 4:30.
The fundraiser is part of a large-scale effort to replace funds that were rescinded by the elimination of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting earlier this year. Federal funding accounts for roughly one-third of WMMT’s budget.
“We’ve been a voice for the community for a long time,” stated WMMT Interim General Manager Jared Hamilton, “we provide many services for the community; public affairs programming, Calls From Home, and are now creating an Emergency Preparedness Cohort to assist during emergencies. We’re looking for new avenues to generate funding, and these incredible musicians have stepped up to support us.”
“WMMT looms large in my heartscape,” said Will Oldham, the musician behind Bonnie “Prince” Billy. “Radio can’t be modified by an algorithm, it is a free and open space, and WMMT pulls elements from the past and present and future into its broadcasting to keep the listenership empowered and entertained.”
Oldham, a Louisville native, has an extensive history with WMMT/Appalshop, first learning of the organization while filming a role in the 1987 John Sayles film Matewan. He has been a guest DJ on WMMT a number of times over the years, and previously performed at Appalshop's Seedtime on the Cumberland Festival. Bonnie “Prince” Billy's newest album, The Purple Bird, was released earlier this year.
Grace Rogers, also of Louisville, released her album Mad Dogs in May, and performed at Appalshop’s Seedtime on the Cumberland Festival in June. Sarah Kate Morgan & Leo Shannon recently released Featherbed, their first collaborative album, on June Appal Recordings—Appalshop’s in-house record label. Featherbed was recently named a Best New Country Album by Bandcamp.
WMMT-FM is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary on the airwaves, serving the region through community DJ partnerships, original documentary storytelling, local emergency and weather alerts, and the aforementioned Calls From Home—a weekly radio show that connects families with their incarcerated loved ones through on-air messaging.
Make a $25+ donation in advance using the QR code or this link https://appalshop.donorsupport.co/page/WMMTConcertSeries — or donate at the door for entry. (Note: Please bring your proof of donation with you!)

November's Pay-What-You-Want Album
As you might have seen, June Appal has recently been celebrating the release of Featherbed by Sarah Kate Morgan and Leo Shannon. In the spirit of gifted musical duos, our November PWYW album is Wade and Julia Mainer's In the Land of Melody-this married bluegrass pair made gorgeous guitar and banjo pickin' gospel tunes. Also featured on our Bandcamp page is footage of Julia and Wade performing at the 1991 Seedtime on the Cumberland Festival.
You can learn more about them, stream the album, and purchase it for any price you choose (including FREE!) by visiting our Bandcamp page.
