The Women Who Shape Our Mountains

This Women’s History Month, we honor the voices, stories, and leadership of Appalachian women past and present

The legacy of Appalachian women is felt deeply and widely across this region.

Our movements, our music, and our grit are rooted in the powerful footsteps of women who have long called these mountains home. Always—but especially during Women’s History Month—let us honor the women who lead our communities, nurture our families, champion our causes, and inspire us daily.

At Appalshop, women have a long history of stepping up—leading programs, launching initiatives, and doing the hard work that keeps things moving forward. Early filmmakers like Mimi Pickering, Elizabeth Barret, and Anne Lewis helped pave the way for new generations of filmmakers and media producers, especially the young women and girls who come through our Appalachian Media Institute program. Volunteer DJs like Sweet Tater (aka Zelma Forbes) have brought life, laughter, and joy to our community radio station, WMMT, for decades. Since 2024, we have been led by Executive Director Tiffany Sturdivant, one of the few women to hold such a senior leadership role. And, of course, it was not only Bill Richardson who came from New York to Whitesburg, Kentucky to start the original Appalachian Film Workshop that would eventually become Appalshop as we know it—his wife, Josephine Richardson, was by his side the whole time.

The work and importance of women everywhere, but particularly in small-town, rural communities like those throughout Appalachia, cannot be denied. In fact, many films in our extensive 50+ year old catalog were either made by women, about women, or both. In celebration of this important month, we’ve brought these film productions together into one place: our new Women's History Month playlist on YouTube. We hope you will take the time to watch a few of these films this month!

Remembering the Scotia Mine Disaster

Marking the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Scotia Mine Disaster in Oven Fork, Kentucky

This week marks the 50th anniversary of the Scotia Mine Disaster, which claimed a total of 26 lives during two separate methane explosions at the mine in Oven Fork of Letcher County, Kentucky. The first explosion occurred on March 9th, 1976 and killed 15 miners; the second explosion was on March 11th and killed 8 miners and 3 federal mine inspectors.

Labeled one of the worst mine disasters in U.S. history, this tragic event has left a lasting impact on the people and communities of southeastern Kentucky. To honor this anniversary and remember the lives lost, we’ve created a Scotia Mine YouTube playlist where you can find all of our currently available content about the disaster—from our Film Department, Appalachian Media Institute, and WMMT Mountain Talks—in one place. We hope this playlist will serve as a resource for those looking to learn more about the history of Scotia, the March 9th and March 11th disasters, and the many lives and families forever impacted.
