Overview
Over its 50+ years as a multi-disciplinary arts and education center, Appalshop has amassed a growing body of archival materials that include thousands of hours of 16mm film, videotape and audio recordings as well as photographic negatives and prints, paper documents and material ephemera created primarily by individuals from Appalachia. Appalshop’s audiovisual holdings comprise the largest collection of moving image documentation of the central Appalachian region in the world. The Appalshop Archive safeguards and improves access to these materials, which offer a multifaceted view of the region and bear witness to shared histories of economic oppression and labor struggle, social activism as well as racism, resilience, music, art, family bonds and lived experiences across a community with a profound sense of place-based identity.
In order to sustain and improve access to the collections, the Archive is in need of critical upgrades to its physical infrastructure, including the replacement of a leaking roof, expanded storage and a dedicated work space where archive staff can safely process, preserve, and digitize archival materials. The Archive's ability to make a wealth of currently inaccessible materials available to current and future generations of community members, scholars, researchers, and the public, will grow with improvements to its infrastructure.
With architectural and engineering plans drafted, we are now embarking on a 4-year capital campaign made possible by an Infrastructure and Capacity Building Challenge Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. To meet the 3:1 Challenge, we must raise $375,000 to leverage $125,000 from the NEH for this $500,000 project.Appalshop Archive is seeking submissions from digital artists and designers to help us in our marketing and campaign efforts to help raise these funds. Appalshop Archive is currently focused on highlighting four crucial themes around life in Appalachia as told through the materials in our archive: BIPOC in Appalachia, labor history of Appalachia, women’s history in Appalachia, and family and social life in Appalachian culture.
