Giving Tuesday is upon us, and we’re embarking on a quest!
Appalshop is internationally known in Appalachian Arts & Media, partly because of our ambitious nature–how many organizations can you name that run their own radio station, physical and digital archive, film production studio, youth media workshop, annual arts & music festival, record label, community theater, and no-cost Appalachian music classes? As you might imagine, it takes a lot of gear to run even one of those programs–nevertheless all of them!
This Giving Tuesday, we are asking for your support of our Appalshop Equipment Fund, which is specifically used to purchase, replace, and update equipment to support our program’s needs. When you support this fund, you put media-making tools directly into the hands of the communities we serve; including the teenage intern learning to make her first film, the radio DJ broadcasting messages on-air to incarcerated loved ones, the young child and retired man both picking up a fiddle for the first time in Passing the Pick & Bow. When you support our Equipment Fund, you support our programs, and the people who benefit from them most.
Our Recovery Continues
In July 2022, we lost a significant amount of our equipment when our building was flooded. Over the past three years, we’ve slowly been rebuilding, thanks to the support of partners, friends, foundations, and thoughtful individuals who have reached out to offer us whatever they can to help our artists and media makers continue their work.
However, the rebuilding process is ongoing. This Giving Tuesday campaign gives us the ability to purchase much-needed items to support our programs, and to ensure that we have the tools necessary to keep documenting stories of Appalachia; the place we call home.
You can find suggested giving levels below, but we encourage you to give any amount that feels comfortable to you. You can find the full details of our campaign at www.appalshop.org/

We’re incredibly proud of the work we’ve done this year. This year has seen Appalshop release new films, new musical albums, host another Seedtime Festival, open our new WMMT-FM studio, launch another AMI cohort, witness the induction of Appalshop archival materials into the Library of Congress, and much, much more. This has been a year where we’ve truly been grounded in community, and we’re thankful to continue building that community alongside you.
As always, we are massively grateful for your support.
In solidarity,
Appalshop Staff
