COAL REPORT September 30, 2008

Three Kentucky miners are charged with violations of the Mine Safety Act, according to the Mountain Eagle. Ira Sergent, Johnny Osborne, and Reggie Raleigh worked at the Stillhouse No. 1 mine in Harlan County in December 2006 when the alleged violations took place. The men are charged with allowing the mine’s main fan to be shut off for six hours while work proceeded, and with making a ventilation change without cutting off power and moving workers out of the mine. Stillhouse Mining has been fined $760,000 for the same violations; the company is contesting the fine. The Stillhouse No. 1 mine was the site of a roof collapse that killed two miners in 2005.
