Welcome to Front Porch, an interactive, online multimedia database that documents, records, and shares
profiles of traditional musicians in the central Appalachian region. Each
profile contains the musician's photograph, biographical information, a brief
oral history interview in both audio and text formats, and video clip of a song
or two. Front Porch is designed to be used by musicians, scholars, students,
and all others interested in exploring the world of traditional Appalachian
music, from bluegrass to old-time and everything in between. You can search for
profiles by name, Kentucky county, or year of birth, or you can search the oral
history database by keyword. Begin your search here.

It gives me a reason to keep living, to keep going, ‘cause it’s carrying on not just my father’s tradition but it’s carrying on a wonderful tradition of many people, both black and white.

we will be creating profile content on-site over the next
year, or contact us and
we can work with you to get your profile up. Front
Porch is for both young and old musicians, and we hope to
