Project Overview

Appalshop, the media, arts, and education center in Whitesburg, Kentucky, will be host to thirteen participants and two group leaders from Indonesia as part of a multi-phased, international exchange project made possible by a grant from the US Department of State Bureau of Cultural and Educational Affairs.  The Exchange Project pairs a growing network of Indonesian media organizations with Appalshop as an established U.S. nonprofit with a commitment to local voices and cross-cultural exchange in a process of shared learning.

From June 7 – June 22, 2008, a range of activities will take place including media training sessions and collaborative production with Appalshop’s youth leadership program AMI, the Appalachian Media Institute; reciprocal screenings and discussions of films and videos; as well as exposure to the Appalachian region’s history, culture, and social issues through community events and conversations as part of a person-to-person exchange approach.
