| Appalshop started the Community Media Initiative in 1997 to help community-based organizations use media to form new relationships and find new ways to work together to strengthen their communities. CMI works towards this mission by providing technical assistance that addresses the unique needs of organizing groups--building the capacity of groups to sustain new technology skills, leveraging resources, creating models that are effectively shared and spread, and creating a place for strategic discussions about the relationship between technology and grassroots organizing. Community media allows those whose voices have traditionally gone unheard to have an outlet. One of the most effective ways to support and develop leadership is through providing access for people to create their own media and messages. |
