The steel sash windows, installed when the building was built in the 1940s, are made of very high quality steel that is no longer being produced. Restoring these existing windows is more cost effective than replacing them, and also preserves the historical character of the building. Steel sash windows are typical of larger building built in the late 1800s through 1940’s, and can be found in buildings throughout Whitesburg and the east Kentucky region.
Much thanks to Patrick Kennedy and the Kentucky Heritage Council for their help, as well as to Appalshop staff, interns, and friends who have donated their time to the effort!

Appalshop receives state TEA-21 Grant for Renovations
Appalshop received a state TEA-21 enhancement grant from the KY Department of Transportation. This grant is for the preservation of historic buildings along Kentucky’s highways. Funds will go to support the renovation of the building’s shell components, which include re- roofing the building, replacing and restoring windows, re- wiring the building, and installing a central heating system.
Civic Design Process for the Boone building completed
In April Appalshop completed a civic design process for the Boone building, sponsored by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. This process identified community needs for public spaces in Letcher County, to be incorporated into the final use plan for the Boone building. Appalshop consulted with 11 community organizations in the county, and worked with UK School of Design students on this project. A public community forum was held in late March to discuss priorities and design ideas for the building. From these discussions UK students created designs and drawings for potential uses of the building.
