Ray Hicks - Jack Alive! (June Appal 052)
North Carolina's master storyteller, passed away in 2003. As part of the production for June Appal's 1989 release JACK ALIVE!, Appalshop recorded eight hours of Ray's account of his life and times, material more particular and personal than the Jack Tales for which he is famous. This audio material is on four VHS cassettes recorded in the now obsolete F-1 digital format. In addition, Appalshop has approximately 90 minutes of reel-to-reel audiotape of two of Ray's performances recorded at its annual Seedtime on the Cumberland festival.
Ralph Blizard & The New Southern Ramblers – Blizard Train
(JA0056)
Tennessee native and 2002 National Heritage Award winner Ralph Blizard was internationally known for his distinctive Southern Appalachian long-bow fiddling. Released in 1989 by June Appal Recordings, Blizard Train is considered one of his finest releases. Ralph’s sliding improvisational fiddle style is backed by the exciting rhythmic drive the New Southern Ramblers. After some 70 years playing music, Ralph passed away in late 2004. We honor Ralph’s legacy through the preservation of the original ¼ inch audio master tapes of Blizard Train, on sale now at the Appalshop Web Store.
