Will also co-hosted a radio program at Appalshop, which was recorded on the evening of July 26 th, 2005 in WMMT 88.7 Studio A. Appalshop filmmaker Robert Salyer co-hosted the show – which features releases from June Appal Recordings, Appalshop’s record label. Started in 1974, the label was formed by a group of young area musicians known as the Mountain Musician’s Cooperative. JuneAppal began as an effort to preserve and document traditional American music, and in 1976 received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to produce records from field recordings of traditional music, and older musicians were again in the limelight. This program, called the Appalseed Field Project, was operated under the direction of musician and producer John McCutcheon. Throughout the 1980s and 90s June Appal continued to search out and record traditional Appalachian musicians in the region.
